Location: Port Otago
Wave Type: all studies

Located some 5 km northwest along the coast from the entrance to Port Otago, Whareakeake, also known as Murderers, or Murdering Bay. Offshore from Whareakeake is a dredgings disposal site. Recent work has indicated that the disposal of dredge material is important for focusing waves into this nationally significant surf break.

When conditions are right for surfable waves at Whareakeake it produces long right-handers that are world-class. The surf break is adjacent to the long rocky headland of Purehurehu Point, sticking out from the north facing coastline. Waves peel down the headland in to the bay, breaking over a mix of sand and rock.
